University of Aldo Moro

The Palazzo dell’Ateneo, an impressive structure in Piazza Umberto I, is an extraordinary architectural example. Just as extraordinary is the Hall of Frescoes.
The monumental rectangular building has a delicate cream-coloured façade and is divided into three levels. The ground floor is covered with a polished ashlar, while the entrance has three round arched iron gates, framed by four Ionic columns that support the elegant balcony of the first floor.

The Latin inscription Università degli studi Aldo Moro stands under the second floor, which in turn is surmounted by a tower that houses a tower clock and small bells.
The elegant Hall of Frescoes, used as an archaeological museum in 1890 and since 2003 also used as a conference room, is the pearl of this beautiful building. The long room is to be explored: the entire ceiling is in fact decorated by the hand of Casanova with bizarre grotesques and geometric shapes with rather bright colors. The frescoes also dominate the vault of a pretty adjoining room, adorned with eagles, temples and plant motifs that surround a lonely pale pink angel.
